India's coastal state of Goa is believed to hold as much as 1 billion tons of iron ore in its eastern hills. Mining operations were largely halted in 2012 due to illegal activities and damage from toxic water to farmlands, rivers and forest habitats.

Before the disruption in 2012, iron ore contributed about 25% of Goa's revenue, and the state provided as much as half of India's raw steel exports.

Vedanta Limited holds 10 mining leases in Goa, where local governments support reopening operations due to an ongoing economic slump amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Following a review by India's Supreme Court, mining activities are expected to resume by October 2020.
