Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--About $225 million will be put into Vietnam's power infrastructure this year by the country's Southern Electricity Corporation (SEC). The projects to be undertaken include a sea cable system from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc Island and power transmission networks in rural areas.

SEC has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with the Prysmian Powerlink (Milan, Italy) company to lay 56 kilometers of sub-sea cable to Phu Quoc Island. The power transmission line also has a 7.6-kilometer stretch on land, plus a 110-kilovolt (kV) substation. This project is scheduled for completion in 2014 .The total investment in the transmission line will be more than $111 million.

The construction of power grids inhabited by the Khmer people in Kien Giang, Soc Trang and Tra Vinh provinces will take an investment of $49 million.

The rural power distribution project, which is being funded by the German Development Bank, is being fast-tracked to meet a 2014 deadline. The project targets a secure and stable electricity supply, improved safety and the reduction of power losses in the rural areas.

The company has invested $139 million in 45 power grid projects of 110 kV each and 218 distribution networks in the south of the country.
