Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Weyerhauser Company (NYSE:WY) is pressing forward with plans to increase the output of its electrical generating plant at a pulp and paper complex in Longview, Washington.

The company plans to replace three small steam-turbine generators with a single unit rated up to 50 megawatts (MW) and is proceeding through the regulatory process to obtain the necessary approvals. The project could potentially see construction mid-year 2010 and be online in 2011.

Weyerhauser operates a topping-cycle cogeneration system that is fully integrated with its manufacturing facilities. Steam is generated at a rate of about 1.25 million pounds per hour in a black liquor recovery boiler, a multi-fuel unit, and three package boilers. Weyerhaueser generates about 40 MW, primarily from two turbine generators. Prior to the recent removal of two smaller units, generating output was 62 MW. Electrical consumption at the site is approximately 240 MW.
