Wisconsin Energy Prepares for Construction of Grassroot Coal-Fired Power Plant in Great Lake Region

Preparation is being done, as Wisconsin Energy Corporation (NYSE:WEC ) (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) waits for the notice-to-proceed (NTP) for the construction of the $2.15 billion grassroot 1,354-megawatt coal-fired Elm Road Generating Station. The company expects to receive the notice-to-proceed this summer, with construction on the first unit scheduled to start in the fall.

The Elm Road plant will be an extension of the existing 1,200-megawatt coal-fired Oak Creek Power Station (Oak Creek, Wisconsin) and will be located about a half mile away. The new facility is to include two 677-megawatt Hitachi steam turbine/generator sets, with two Hitachi supercritical wall-fired dry bottom boilers.

Bechtel Power Corporation (Frederick, Maryland) was awarded the contract to perform engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC). Bechtel, in turn, awarded Hitachi America Limited (Tarrytown, New York) a contract for the construction and provision of the equipment.

Project completion on the first unit is scheduled for 2009, with completion of the second unit in 2010. The plant will be owned and operated by Wisconsin Energy subsidiary, Elm Road Generating Station Supercritical LLC (Milwaukee, Wisconsin).
