Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--High North BioResources LP (Wilmington, Delaware), a joint venture company formed to produce oil from fast pyrolysis, has announced plans to construct the world's largest commercial-scale plant to produce oil from biomass. The company is a partnership between Ensyn Technologies Incorporated (Ottawa, Ontario) and Tolko Industries Limited (Vernon, British Columbia).
The plant will be located at Tolko's existing sawmill in High Level, Alberta, and will utilize forest waste generated from Tolko's seven operational mills. The facility is expected to process 400 tons of biomass daily, producing 85 million liters of pyrolysis oil annually.
In Ensyn's RTP fast pyrolysis process technology, biomass is rapidly heated to 500 degrees Celsius by a tornado of hot sand, and then rapidly cooled. The process can convert biomass into liquids in less than two seconds.
The oil can be used in power generation, as well as the production of transportation fuel, food flavors, and adhesive resins for the construction industry.
The estimated $80 million plant is currently being permitted and undergoing regulatory approvals. Once financing is complete, construction could start as early as the fall of 2011. The plant is expected to reach commercial production by mid-2013.
