Yankee Gas Services Company Selects Site in Connecticut for A New LNG Peak Shaving Facility

Yankee Gas Services Company (Meriden Connecticut) has received a $2 million state loan to study the possibility of constructing a new LNG peak shaving facility to be located in Waterbury Connecticut. The over $50 million plant will have the capacity to liquefy and store up to two Bcf of natural gas in the off season for use in peak demand times thus ensuring a steady supply of gas. Yankee Gas is presently in the process of securing state permitting and selecting a turnkey contractor for the project. Construction is expected to begin in late 2003 with a targeted in-service date in late 2004 for the peak winter heating season.

Yankee Gas Services Company is a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities (NYSE:NU) (Berlin Connecticut) and is Connecticut's largest natural gas distribution company, serving approximately 191,000 customers in 70 cities and towns. Yankee Gas constructed 34 miles of new natural gas mains in 10 Connecticut communities during 2001.
