Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $3.45 billion in Industrial Manufacturing project starts planned for third-quarter 2019 in the Southeast market region, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee. The projects cover a range of sectors, from auto parts to data centers to port projects. Alabama, with more than $1.19 billion in planned projects, leads the region in terms of project value.

Data centers are big business across the U.S., and among the largest projects planned to kick off in the region in the quarter is Quality Technology Services' (Overland Park, Kansas) grassroot data center in Atlanta, Georgia. The single-story, 488,000-square-foot building will feature customizable offices and workspaces, and supporting equipment to provide data colocation services. Construction is set to begin this summer, for completion in the first half of 2020. JE Dunn Construction (Atlanta) is the general contractor on the project, which has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $550 million. The Southeast is becoming a hotspot for automakers, and along with this comes plants to manufacture both autos and auto parts. The region is set to see more than $1.2 billion in auto-related projects kick off in the upcoming quarter, including at least 14 capital and maintenance projects at tire plants. Among the largest tire project is Hankook Tire America Corporation (Clarksville, Tennessee) expansion of its manufacturing facility in Clarksville. The project will double the size of the existing facility, which manufactures 6,000 tires per day, to 1.5 million square feet. The expansion will enable the production of high-end performance passenger tires for select Toyota Camry and Honda Accord models. Other upcoming auto-related projects include DaikyoNishikawa Corporation's (Hiroshima, Japan) grassroot plastic automotive parts-manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama. The facility will supply plastic parts such as bumpers and instrument panels to the Mazda and Toyota vehicle assembly plant under construction in Huntsville. In line with the state's increased automobile production, the Alabama State Port Authority (Mobile, Alabama) will increase the means to export autos at the Port of Mobile. The project entails converting approximately 57 acres of a former bulk material-handling facility into an automotive processing and logistics terminal, where vehicles can be driven onto cargo ships bound for markets around the world. In Florida, the Orlando International Airport plans to kick off construction of a facility to house a central energy plant and emergency power generator at its South Terminal C. The 10,000-square-foot building will house all emergency transformers and distribution wiring from the central energy plant to the terminal. The project is the first part of a two-phase, $1.8 billion project. Phase II will add a photovoltaic solar system. Phase I is expected to be completed in early 2021.
