Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Skanska AB (Stockholm, Sweden), a multinational construction and development company with offices in the U.S., U.K., Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, has seen a slew of project awards in North America recently, with much of it attributed to natural gas-fired power facilities and commuter-rail extensions. Industrial Info's database is tracking $13.23 billion worth of global projects involving Skanska in some capacity. About 80% of the total is attached to the 10 highest-valued projects, and more than 90% of the total is attributed to just three industries: Industrial Manufacturing, Power and Pharmaceutical & Biotech.
The three highest-valued projects are commuter rail lines in California: the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's $2.82 billion Purple Line expansion (Phase I) and $1.07 billion downtown Los Angeles extension, and Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's $2.3 billion Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Corridor extension (Phase I). Skanska USA is performing design-build services for all three. The Purple Line will include three new stations in the Wilshire area; the downtown expansion will include three new stations near Long Beach and Santa Monica; and the 10-mile Silicon Valley extension will run from Fremont to northern San Jose.
For more information, including major components, environmental requirements, estimated completion dates and contractor contact information see Industrial Info's project reports for the Purple Line, downtown extension and Silicon Valley extension.
The highest-valued Power Industry project is a natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) power stations from Competitive Power Ventures Incorporated (Silver Spring, Maryland).
Skanska's British subsidiary is serving as general contractor on the largest Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry project to involve the multinational company: AstraZeneca plc's (NYSE:AZN) (London, England) $500 million addition to its biomedical campus in Cambridge, England. AstraZeneca plans to add a research and development facility for small-molecule and biological products, as well as protein engineering. For more information, such as specifications and contractor info, see Industrial Info's project report.
In recent years, more than 30 global companies have invested in Cambridge, turning the city into Europe's answer to Silicon Valley. Another firm to set up its tent is MRC Technology (London), which recently teamed up with AstraZeneca to launch an initiative to find new epigenetic drug targets in respiratory disease, according to Cambridge News.
The four other highest-valued projects to involve Skanska are:
