Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Skanska AB (Stockholm, Sweden), a multinational construction and development company with offices in the U.S., U.K., Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, is at work on numerous projects in response to metropolitan demand for transport and global demand for natural gas-fired energy. Industrial Info's database is tracking $13.7 billion worth of global projects involving Skanska in some capacity. More than 70% of the total is attached to the 10 highest-valued projects, and about 90% of the total is attributed to just three industries: Industrial Manufacturing, Pharmaceutical & Biotech and Power Generation.

Three of the top 10 projects are commuter rail lines, two of which are under construction in California: the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's $2.82 billion Purple Line expansion (Phase I) and $1.07 billion downtown Los Angeles extension. The Purple Line will run nearly four miles and include three new stations in the Wilshire area, while the downtown expansion will run nearly two miles and include three new stations near Long Beach and Santa Monica.

Skanska, in a joint venture with Posillico (Farmingdale, New York), is scheduled to finish work before the end of the year on Long Island Railroad's (Jamaica, New York) $297 million Phase II double-track project in Queens, New York. The project is expected to add a 7.4-mile mainline track and five stations to relieve the strain on the existing line. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Purple Line and downtown extensions in Los Angeles and the Queens project.

The Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry has the second-highest total investment value for projects involving Skanska, with its top three projects in Europe. Skanska's British subsidiary is serving as general contractor on AstraZeneca plc's (NYSE:AZN) (London, England) $500 million addition to its biomedical campus in Cambridge, England, which is expected to wrap up soon. AstraZeneca plans to add a research and development facility for small-molecule and biological products, as well as protein engineering.

But the largest Pharmaceutical & Biotech project is in Skanska's home country: European Spallation Source ERIC's (Lund, Sweden) $2.27 billion neutron-based research facility in Lund, Sweden, which will include an accelerator tunnel, target station and numerous labs. The project kicked off in mid-2014 and is not expected to wrap up until mid-2023, at the earliest. Skanska also is at work on AstraZeneca's $299.3 million clinical-scale therapeutics building addition in Sodertalje, Sweden, which will include facilities for research, development and packaging. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Cambridge facility in England, and research facility and therapeutics building in Sweden.

Skanska's two largest Power Generation Industry projects are natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) plants. Competitive Power Ventures Incorporated's (Silver Springs, Maryland) $900 million Valley Energy Center in Middletown, New York, which is set to wrap up in the near future, will generate 650 megawatts (MW) from two combustion turbines and a steam turbine, all from Siemens AG (Munich, Germany). NRG Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton, New Jersey) $320 million Canal Power Station in Sandwich, Massachusetts, set to finish construction next year, would generate 330 MW from a General Electric (NYSE:GE) dual-fuel combustion turbine. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Valley Energy Center and Canal Power Station.

Other projects among Skanska's 10 highest-valued are:
  • SCA Forest Products AB's (Sundsvall, Sweden) $922 million Ostrand pulp mill expansion in Sundsvall, Sweden; see project report
  • Outokumpu Oyj's (Helsinki, Finland) $307.9 million chromite mine expansion in Kemi, Finland; see project report
