Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking nearly $4 billion worth of meat and poultry projects under construction in the U.S. The projects cover the range of the preparation process, from slaughter facilities to final packaging lines for prepared products. Covering the gamut of this process is Tyson Foods Incorporated (NYSE:TSN) (Springdale, Arkansas), which leads the country in the value of under-construction meat and poultry projects, although other companies make a strong showing as well.
On the upstream side of Tyson's operations, the company is expanding its beef-processing plant in Amarillo, Texas. According to trade media, the Amarillo plant has a daily slaughter capacity of about 6,000 head per day, and Tyson is expanding the harvest floor by about 78,000 square feet, along with another 65,000 square feet of employee welfare space. The project is expected to be completed in the first half of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for more information.
Tyson's project is certainly not the biggest beef-slaughtering project underway in the U.S. That honor goes to American Foods Group LLC's (AFG) (Green Bay, Wisconsin) grassroot beef-processing plant under construction in Wright City, Missouri. AFG broke ground on the $800 million facility last year. Upon completion, which is expected next year, the plant will be able to process 2,400 head of cattle per day and will add 1,300 jobs to the area. Subscribers can click here for more details on the project.
Tyson and other companies also are at work on projects for the assembling, packaging and shipping of final products. For example, Tyson is at work on a 400,000-square-foot grassroot prepared meats facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky, that primarily will provide pork products for Tyson's Wright Brand and Jimmy Dean lines. Tyson also is underway with a grassroot further-processing plant for its chicken products in Danville, Virginia. The facility will produce products such as chicken nuggets and foods in Tyson's Any'tizer line of chicken products. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on the Kentucky and Virginia projects.
Another project for a prepared meat products facility recently kicked off construction. Jack Link's (Minong, Wisconsin) is constructing a grassroot facility for its popular meat sticks and beef jerky products in Perry, Georgia. Phase I is presently underway and entails constructing 200,000 square feet of building space, including production lines. Phase I construction is set to be completed next year, after which a second phase would begin, followed by a third, with each adding an additional 200,000 square feet of space. Phase I is set to be completed next year, and the third and final phase of the plant could possibly begin operations in late 2026. Subscribers can click here for the related reports.
Another large category of the meat and poultry sector is egg production, and Industrial Info is tracking several U.S. projects underway in this area. Strong demand for cage-free eggs exists, and Willamette Egg Farms LLC (Canby, Oregon) is both converting to cage-free operations and expanding production at its egg farm in Moses Lake, Washington. Engineering and construction firm Summit Engineering & Construction (Remington, Indiana) is demolishing existing cage barns and constructing five new layer houses and three pullet houses. The work will allow the farm to increase numbers from a little more than 1 million to more than 2.3 million layers and 500,000 pullets. Construction is set to wrap up this year.
