(Sao Paulo, Brazil), a producer of sugar and ethanol, has awarded Grupo Energisa S.A. a contract to develop a biomass project to increase power plant generation capacity in its operation unit, which is located in the city of Bocaina (Sao Paulo, Brazil). The project's total investment is estimated to be $42 million.

The expansion consists of the addition of two biomass-fired boilers, which will drive two 21-megawatt (MW) steam turbines to increase current 29-MW capacity to 70 MW. Grupo Energisa is in charge of analyzing boilers and steam turbine manufacturer proposals and releasing biddings to select electric and construction firms and subcontractors. Equipment installation is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2013, and the generating unit is to be operational in early 2015. The energy produced will be used to power the plant, and the excess will be sold to the national grid.

Bocaina Sugar Plant is located in the state of Sao Paulo. The plant's operations started in 1962, and it has a capacity to crush 1.4 metric tons of sugar per year and 145,000 gallons of ethanol per day. At present, about 680 people work at the facility during the crushing season.

Tonon Bioenergia produces and commercializes sugar, ethanol and energy. The company has two operating mills in Brazil, and it exports products throughout the five continents.
