Researched by Industrial Info Latinoamerica (Córdoba, Argentina)--Spain's 2,055-megawatt (MW) Asco nuclear power plant, located in Tarragona, Catalonia, has been taken offline.

Unit 1 came offline October 27 for it 22nd refueling outage, and its completion is scheduled for December 7. Unit 2 came offline November 7 for work on one of the transformers, and the reconnection to the grid is expected to take place November 12, plant officials told Industrial Info.

The Nuclear Power Plant began operations in March 1986 and is equipped with two Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) steam generators of 1,028 MW and 1,027 MW, and a pressurized water reactor supplied by Westinghouse LLC (Monroeville, Pennsylvania). The facility is operated by ANAV, a corporate group formed by Endesa S.A. (Madrid, Spain), which holds 85%, and Iberdrola S.A. (OTC:IBDSF) (Bilbao, Spain), which holds 15%.

Both units at Asco have been cleared by the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) to operate until 2021. At present, Spain has eight nuclear reactors that generate 20% of the country's electricity.
