A Midwestern University Plans for New Chilled Water Plant

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The University of Iowa (Iowa City, Iowa) is awaiting capital approval from the board of regents for a new $39 Million chilled water plant (PEC 29000889, Plant 1041913). Plans are to construct a new chilled water plant, northwest of the existing west chilled water plant, in the area formerly occupied by an athletic practice field. Architectural and engineering designs are currently underway and a general contractor is expected to be selected this summer in September with construction starting in the spring of 2005.

When complete in the fall of 2005, the new plant will consist of (3) 4,000 ton steam turbine driven chillers. Stanley Consultants located in Muscatine, Iowa is the architectural and engineering firm currently performing the designs for the new plant.

The University of Iowa, established in 1847, is located on a 1,900-acre campus in Iowa City, Iowa and is composed of 11 colleges, the largest being the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Approximately 28,000 students are enrolled each year with 64% of the students coming from Iowa, 21% from adjoining states and 8% from the remaining states. Iowa was the first U.S. public university to admit men and women on an equal basis. The total annual operating budget is roughly $1.2 billion and covers the costs of maintaining and running 119 major buildings. The university includes world-renowned research programs in hydraulics, genetics, hearing and recorded innovations in biomedical engineering, biomedical sciences, agricultural medicine, biocatalysis, and pharmacology education.
