Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Owners and developers of industrial plants in the U.S. have outsourced design, engineering, and/or construction services (E&C) on more than 1,350 active capital projects, representing close to $221 billion in Total Investment Value (TIV). These numbers are based on a recent study performed by Industrialinfo.com, identifying major industrial projects in the U.S. that have awarded some form of E&C firm activity.
Active capital projects include those under construction or at some stage of pre-construction activity. Most of the projects are scheduled to kick-off construction within the next two years, but some extend to the five-year period beyond. Typical industrial project pre-construction activities include market analysis, feasibility studies, design engineering, environmental impact studies, architectural services, detailed engineering, and construction management.
The state with the largest TIV for industrial projects with E&C firms involved is California, with about $37 billion across 87 active projects. The numbers in California are skewed by a massive $25 billion high-speed rail project, which is envisioned to enable commuters to travel to and from San Francisco and Los Angeles by Bullet Train. The project, in the works since 2000, is being developed by the California High-Speed Rail Authority, which selected a joint venture of SYSTRA Consulting Incorporated (Bloomfield, New Jersey) and Bechtel Group Incorporated, (San Francisco, California) to provide design services. The project would not start construction until 2007, at the earliest.
The state with the most major industrial project activity, with engineering and construction firms involved is Texas, which has 154 projects in the works. Texas falls second in TIV, with $16.3 billion. Some of the more active companies in Texas include ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas), with eight projects representing $441 million, Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) (Midland, Michigan), with five projects representing $830 million, and Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) (San Antonio, Texas), with seventeen projects, representing $556 million.
Some of the most active E&C firms working on industrial projects in Texas include Halliburton KBR, a subsidiary of Halliburton (NYSE:HAL)(Houston, Texas), which is currently involved in projects worth $1.1 billion, all of which are petroleum refining or LNG related, and Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:JEC) (Pasadena, California), which is involved in 19 projects, representing $651 million in Texas.
