Alabama Electric Coop Nearing Completion of New 500MW Power Plant

The following is an Advisory by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). OCM-Gantt has completed construction and is performing full load testing of Alabama Electric Cooperative's (AEC) 500 mega-watt (MW) James A. Vann Jr. power station, with commercial startup expected during the 4th week of December 2001.

The project, located five miles north of Andalusia, Alabama next to AEC's McWilliams power station, consist of two Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation W501FD model combustion turbine generators, two Vogt-NEM heat recovery steam generators, one steam turbine generator and 230kV transformers. Major players for the project consisted of OCM-Gantt, a turn-key engineering, procurement, and construction joint venture between Black & Veatch subsidiary Overland Contracting Inc. (OCI) of Overland Park, Kansas and J.A. Jones subsidiary Metric Constructors, Inc. of Charlotte, N.C. OCI performed the engineering and procurement, and Metric is responsible for construction.

A Touchstone Energy. cooperative, AEC is the seventh-oldest generation and transmission cooperative in the United States. Its member owners include 16 distribution cooperatives, the municipalities of Andalusia, Brundidge, Elba, Opp, and the Opp-Micolas Mills. AEC member owners serve about 300,000 consumers in 39 Alabama counties and 10 counties in the Florida panhandle. The corporate complex of AEC is located in Andalusia, Ala.
