Altra Nebraska’s New $200 Million Fuel Ethanol Plant Taking Shape

Altra Nebraska’s New $200 Million Fuel Ethanol Plant Taking Shape

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Privately held biofuel plant developer Altra Incorporated (Los Angeles, California), and wholly owned subsidiary Altra Nebraska LLC (Carleton, Nebraska) is proceeding with construction activity on a new $200 million fuel ethanol plant that will be located in Carleton, Nebraska. The company held its official groundbreaking ceremony last October and started pre-construction activity about a month before that. A lot of dirt was hauled onto the 360-acre location and site preparation and dirt work has been completed and construction is now in full swing with tanks being installed and buildings going up.

Plans call for the creation of a 110 million gallon per year fuel ethanol plant that will process some 42 million bushels of Nebraska grown corn annually. The plant will also produce 300,000 tons per year of distillers dried grains, a by-product of ethanol production.

The company selected leading ethanol plant builder Fagen Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota) to design and build the plant and construction is expected to be completed by late spring or early summer 2008.

The project has hit somewhat of a snag with its rail infrastructure developer Union Pacific. It is not clear if the four loop tracks with nine feeder tracks configuration will work on the site. Costs for the project could jump if a truck overpass is to be incorporated into the site.

Altra has a strategic plan to build 500 million gallons of ethanol capacity into its portfolio and currently operates California’s only large scale plant in Goshen -- Phoenix Bio Industries, a 25 million gallon per year plant. Plans are also coming together to build Altra Marion LLC, a 110 million gallon per year plant that will be located in Marion, Ohio. Future plans call for developing at least three additional facilities to reach the companies goal of 500 million gallons of annual capacity.
