Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Baosteel Group Xinjiang Bayi Iron & Steel Company Limited's (SH.600581) (Urumqi, Xinjiang) South Xinjiang Iron & Steel Base began trial operations in Baicheng County on March 28, 2013. It is the largest iron and steel complex to be built in Xinjiang, according to an announcement from Baosteel Group (Shanghai) on March 29.

Baosteel Group's South Xinjiang Iron & Steel Base in Baicheng is a key construction project listed in the 12th Five-Year (2011-15) Plan for the Xinjiang autonomous region. The base mainly comprises a 430 cubic-meter sinter; a 1.2 million-metric-tons-per-year pellet production line; two 1,800-cubic-meter blast furnaces; three 90-ton converters; two square billet continuous casting machines; a high-speed wire steel mill; a sheet-rolling mill; a bar steel mill; and associated common and auxiliary facilities.

With a total investment of $1.3 billion, the project is designed to meet the demand of sustainable development with the adoption of modernized processes and equipment; clean production technology; and a modernized management system to reduce the consumption of fuel and various resources, reduce various wastes during the production, and reduce the emission of pollutants by the reutilization of various wastes such as waste heat, residual gas, wastewater and solid waste from production.

As reported, construction of the project kicked off On August 18, 2010, but the project didn't receive approval from the Development and Reform Commission of Xinjiang autonomous region until August 2010.

The initial production capacity commissioned in March is 1.4 million metric tons per year. Upon completion, the production capacity of the project will be 3 million metric tons per year, including 2.97 million metric tons of pig iron, 1.2 million metric tons of steel wires, 850,000 metric tons of bars and 670,000 metric tons of sheets.
