Brazil's Pulp and Paper Industry Tries to Curb Environmental Impact, an Industrial Info Market Brief
The Pulp & Paper Industry uses heavy volumes of high-quality water in paper production, and its effluents contain high contamination
Released Wednesday, October 21, 2020
The Pulp & Paper Industry uses heavy volumes of high-quality water in paper production, and its effluents contain high contamination. Some of its more than 250 compounds originate naturally from wood (lignin, tannins, etc.), while others are synthetic, incorporated into the effluents in the manufacturing and bleaching processes of cellulose pulps, such as phenols, dioxins and furans.
To reduce their environmental impact, numerous paper manufacturers across Brazil, such as like Klabin, CMPC, Suzano, Duratex, and Veracel, are cutting their consumption and investing in systems that allow the reuse of water within their factories.
For instance, Guararape Industria de Compensados is replacing an old wastewater-treatment system with a new vacuum-evaporation system to evaporate water effluents and produce steam for the industrial process, reducing the environmental impact and cost.
