Calpine Underway on 550MW Power Plant in South Carolina

The following is an advisory by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources Inc.; Houston, Texas). Demand for electricity in South Carolina is projected to grow three percent annually between now and 2004 and utility companies and Private Energy Producers (PEP's) are developing approaches to meet this growth in demand.

Calpine Corporation (NYSE: CPN) (San Jose, Calif.), has responded with construction of a new 550 mega-watt (MW) natural gas-fired cogeneration plant in West Columbia, South Carolina, on property owned by Eastman Chemical Company. In turn, Calpine will provide Eastman with process steam for polymers production.

Construction has been underway at the site since September of 2001 and the project is expected to take 24 months to complete. TIC out of Steamboat Springs, Colorado has been selected as the General Contractor for this $260 million job that is expected to be in commercial operation by the third quarter of 2003.

The Columbia Energy Center will be configured with two General Electric 7FA combustion turbines, a Toshiba steam turbine generator and two Nooter/Ericksen heat recovery steam generators. Electricity will be competitively priced and sold to the region's growing wholesale market.

Calpine is focused on clean, efficient, natural gas-fired generation and is the world's largest producer of renewable geothermal energy. They have launched the largest power development program in North America. To date, the company has approximately 34,900MW of base load capacity and 7,600MW of peaking capacity in operation, under construction, and in announced development in 29 states, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
