Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The Power Industry leads all industries in the state of Indiana for potential plant project construction starts in 2005. The Power Industry commands 58%, or about $3.8 billion of the total amount ($6.5 billion) of industrial projects currently under development in the state. Given that Indiana generates 80% or more of its electricity from coal-fired power plants, it is not surprising that most of the 52 Power Industry projects currently being monitored by Industrialinfo.com, are coal-fired power plant environmental upgrades. Cinergy Corporation (NYSE:CIN) (Cincinnati, Ohio) is planning more than $1.5 billion in capital expenditures at its Indiana coal-fired power plants, across thirteen projects. Seven of these projects are capital projects, including a potential new IGCC plant in Edwardsport, Indiana (See December 14, 2004 news article - Cinergy Eyes Edwardsport, Indiana, as Potential Site for Integrated Gasification Combined-Cycle Plant. The remaining six are planned maintenance outage projects on coal-fired units.
Second, after the Power Industry, is the Industrial Manufacturing Industry with 65 projects, representing $927 million total investment value (TIV). The automotive manufacturing sector accounts for about a third of the planned TIV, across eleven projects. One of the larger projects scheduled to begin construction in 2005 in this industry is a $175 million expansion at a General Motors (NYSE:GM)(Detroit, Michigan) truck assembly plant.
After Power and the Industrial Manufacturing Industries is the Oil & Gas Transmission Industry, which has only five projects, but represents about $577 million. Enbridge Incorporated, Citizens Gas & Coke Utilities, and Southern Union Company are all planning pipeline expansions in Indiana.
The Metals & Minerals Industry is looking at 23 projects, representing about $347 million. More than half of this will be spent at steel mills.
