Central Iowa Energy’s Iowa Biodiesel Plant Now Running at Full Capacity

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Investor owned Central Iowa Energy LLC (Newton, Iowa) is now operational and running at full capacity at its new biodiesel production facility located in Newton, Iowa. The state now has four commercial-scale operating biodiesel plants with a combined production capacity of over 57 million gallons per year. Other Iowa operational plants include West Central Soy (Ralston), Clinton County Bio Energy (Clinton) and Tri-City Energy (Keokuk).

Central Iowa Energy’s plant started construction in the fall of 2005 and the plant has been operational for about three weeks now. The plant was built by Renewable Energy Group (Ralston, Iowa) and took about eighteen months to complete. The plant will process soybean oil into the renewable fuel and will also have the capability of processing other vegetable oils and animal fats.

Construction costs to build the plant were in the $35 million range and brought some 30 new jobs to the rural community.

In addition to the Central Iowa Energy plant, biodiesel technology provider Renewable Energy Group is involved with another eight biodiesel projects across the U.S. including two they plan to own and operate. Plans are coming together to build its own plants in Emporia, Kansas and Cairo, Illinois.

The company is also working with Atlantic Bio Energy in Mount Olive, North Carolina (30MM gal/yr); Blackhawk Biofuels in Freeport, Illinois (30MM gal/yr); Heartland Biodiesel in Rockport, Missouri (30MM gal/yr); Renewable Resource Group in Hahnville, Louisiana (60MM gal/yr); Southern Iowa BioEnergy in Lamoni, Iowa (30MM gal/yr) and Victory Renewable Fuels in Lester, Iowa (30MM gal/yr).

Cost estimates to build these facilities represent over $380 million in capital spending.
