Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Shanxi Shentou Power Generation Company Limited's (SSPGC) (Shuozhou, Shanxi) 2,000-megawatt (MW) addition project received preliminary approval from the National Energy Administration (NEA) on March 12, 2013, according to an announcement from China Power Investment Corporation (Beijing) on March 21.
SSPGC is based in the former Shentou No.1 Power Plant, which was built in three phases in 1971 with a total installed capacity of 1,300 MW, including two 50-MW units that were shut down in December 2008 built in Phase I; two 200-MW units built in Phase II; and four 200-MW units built in Phase III. The company became a fully owned subsidiary of China Power International Development Limited (HK.2380) (China Power), the listed flagship of China Power Investment Corporation.
Following the shutdown of the two units built in Phase II, SSPGC built two 600-MW units in a new site near Pingshuo East A-G Coal Mine. The first unit is expected to begin operations in April 2013, and the second unit is expected to begin operations in June 2013. The 2,000-MW addition (units 3 and 4) project is located just beside the project for the two 600-MW units, which is only about 1.3 kilometers from the 20 million-metric-ton-per-year Pingshuo East A-G Coal Mine.
According to the approval, the project also will be built to replace small coal-fired units with larger ones--specifically, to build two 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical, direct air-cooling, coal-fired units to replace the four existing 200-MW coal-fired units at the former Shentou No.1 Power Plant, and to expand the capacity of new site to 3,200 MW.
Presently, the project owner is working with Shanxi Electric Power Exploration & Design Institute (Taiyuan, Shanxi) for the detailed feasibility study of the project. According to the schedule, construction of the project is expected to kick off in the first half of 2014, and both units will be put into operation in 2016.
