Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--China Shenhua Energy Company Limited's (Beijing) (SHA:601088) 2,000-megawatt (MW), grassroot, coal-fired Wanzhou power project recently received final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the top planner in China, according to an announcement from China Shenhua on August 8, 2012.

According to the announcement, the Shenhua Wanzhou Coal-Fired Power Project will be built and operated by Chongqing Wanzhou Port & Power Company Limited (Chongqing), a project company established by its fully owned subsidiary, Shenhua Shendong Power Company Limited (Yulin, Shaanxi). The project will be located in Xintian Town in the Economic Development Zone of Wanzhou District, Chongqing City. Two 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired units, together with a high-efficiency electrostatic dust remover, flue gas desulfuration device, denitration device and online flue gas continuous monitoring device, will be built with a total investment of about $1.25 billion. Upon completion, the project will consume about 4.5 million metric tons of coal per year.

The Shenhua Wanzhou Coal-Fired Power Project will be a part of the coal and power base planned by China Shenhua in Wanzhou District. According to the Energy Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement signed between China Shenhua and the Municipal Government of Chongqing City in December 2011, China Shenhua will build a 6,000-MW, coal-fired project, together with a 30 million-metric-ton-per-year coal storage and transfer base in Wanzhou, with a total investment of about $3.65 billion.

Presently, the project owner is working on construction preparation for the project. In July 2012, China Shenhua issued the invitation for bids on site preparation. The groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held on July 28, 2012. According to the schedule, construction of main works will kick off in the beginning of 2013, and both units will begin operations in 2015.
