Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) (Beijing) received preliminary government approval to begin preparations for the Pingjiang Pump-Storage Power Station. The project is part of China's 12th five-year renewable energy plan for 2011-15, the Development and Reform Commission of Hunan Province said on April 28. Preliminary approval was given by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

The proposed Pingjiang Pump-Storage Power Station is located in Fushoushan in Pingjiang County, next to the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan load center of Hunan Grid, and about 75 kilometers from Changsha, the capital city of central China's Hunan province. The project would have four 350-megawatt (MW), vertical Francis pump-reversible, hydraulic-turbine generating units. Total investment in the project is projected to be $1.02 billion.

State Grid Xinyuan Holding Company Limited (Beijing), a subsidiary of the SGCC, will be responsible for developing and operating the project. HydroChina Zhongnan Engineering Corporation (Changsha, Hunan), a subsidiary of China Hydropower Engineering Consultancy Corporation (HydroChina) (Beijing), is responsible for the project's detailed feasibility study.

The detailed feasibility study began in March. According to the schedule, construction will begin in 2015. The project's first unit is expected to begin operations by the end of 2020.

Upon completion, the power station will serve mainly to help meet peak energy demand, and for frequency regulation. It also will serve as an emergency back-up and for voltage regulation on the Hunan Grid.
