Construction Underway for $20 Million Yarn-Manufacturing Plant Expansion in North Carolina

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Frontier Spinning Mills Incorporated (Sanford, North Carolina), a manufacturer of air-jet, open-end and vortex-spun yarns, is undergoing $20 million expansion at its Sanford, North Carolina, manufacturing plant.

Construction plans include adding 70,000 square feet of manufacturing space and the installation of new equipment. Site preparation began in July with building construction starting a month later. Frontier Spinning plans to begin the installation of robotics and automation equipment by year’s end. Overall completion is slated for the spring of 2008. Of the $20 million allocated for the project, $4 million will be spent for the building, and the remaining balance will be invested in new equipment.

The Sanford plant makes fabrics used for fleece, cotton and hosiery. The company considered expanding in other locations, including Mayodan, North Carolina, before deciding on Sanford. Forty-two jobs will be created, increasing the number of employees at the plant to 450.

John S. Clark Company LLC (Mount Airy, North Carolina) was awarded the general construction contract for the building, and Pneumafil Corporation (Charlotte, North Carolina) was awarded the mechanical contract for balance of the work. Frontier handled the purchasing of all the equipment.

Frontier Spinning Mills, which is privately owned, was founded in December 1996. The company merged with Mayo Yarns (Madison, North Carolina) in 2000 to become the second-largest cotton spinner in the United States. The company operates nine manufacturing sites, producing more than 10 million pounds of yarn per week. The company manufactures cotton and cotton-blended yarns for the textile fabric industry and employs more than 1,700 people in four states.
