Consultant Awarded for $700 Million Rail Corridor Planned in Colorado

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Michael Baker Corporation (Lakewood, Colorado) has been selected to provide environmental and preplanning design services for the planned $700 million Interstate 225 Light Rail Corridor for the Denver Regional Transportation District in Denver, Colorado.

Environmental impact studies are currently under way for construction of a 10.5-mile light-rail line that will include eight stations and will be connected to the Southeast Corridor Station at Parker Road and I-225 and to the East Corridor at Smith Road and Peoria. A design-build firm will be selected in early spring 2010, once final funding approval has been received. Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2011, with overall completion slated for 2015.

Environmental studies initially began in 2007. These studies are expected to continue until final approval and funding has been made available. The purpose of the FasTracks I-225 Corridor project was to extend light-rail transit within the I-225 corridor. The project will begin at the Nine Mile Station, serving the Aurora city center. The extension is needed to satisfy the need for multi-modal improvements to address transportation demand.

The Denver Regional Transportation District was founded in 1969 to develop, operate and maintain a transportation system for the people in the district. Approximately 2.6 million people are expected to be serviced in this district, which includes 2,377 miles of transportation routes in eight counties.
