Cottonwood Energy Begins Operation of New Texas Power Plant

Cottonwood Energy Company LP (Deweyville, Texas), a subsidiary of InterGen Energy Incorporated (Burlington, Massachusetts), began commercial operation this summer of the Cottonwood Energy Center located in Deweyville, Texas in Newton County (Plant 1046173).

The 1,235 megawatt (MW) energy center is the first grassroot power plant developed by InterGen in the United States. The project (PEC 01007805) features InterGen's standard plant design, aligning each of the four 171 MW GE Power Systems Frame 7FA-combustion turbines with dedicated waste heat boilers and four 137 MW Alstom Power Incorporated steam turbine generators. Since Cottonwood is designed to operate in a combine cycle configuration the plant will be open to a higher level of plant reliability and operational flexibility.

The owner's engineering contract was awarded to Bechtel Power Corporation (San Francisco, California). Bechtel is a global engineering-construction organization, providing premier technical, management, and directly related services to develop, manage, engineer, build, and operate installations for customers worldwide.

Becon Construction Company based in Houston, Texas was awarded the general construction contract. Becon is a subsidiary of Bechtel Corporation (San Francisco, California). Becon provides merit-shop construction and continuing plant services to projects and owners throughout the United States.

InterGen is a global power generation firm. Founded in 1995, InterGen is jointly owned by Shell Generating (Holding) B.V. and Bechtel Enterprises Energy B.V. the Company is operating or building a total of 21 power stations representing 16,770 megawatts of power. InterGen has projects operating, under construction and in active development in several countries abroad as well as in the United States.
