Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Central Southern China Electric Power Design Institute (CSEPDI) (Wuhan), a subsidiary of China Power Engineering Consulting Corporation (CPECC) (Beijing), recently signed the survey and engineering contract for Hubei Energy Group Ezhou Power Generation Company Limited's (Ezhou, Hubei) 2,000-megawatt (MW) unit addition at the Ezhou Power Plant, according the CPECC announced on April 4, 2014.

The Ezhou Power Plant is located in Gedian Town of Ezhou City, in central China's Hubei province. The power plant currently has two 300-megawatt (MW) and two 600-MW coal-fired units in operation. The Phase III project will be furnished with two 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired units, with sole investment from Hubei Energy Group Company Limited (Wuhan, Hubei) (SZ.000883).

Hubei Energy Group planned to kick off construction of Phase III just after the completion of Phase II in 2010. However, due to bad market conditions, the Phase III project was put on hold until 2013. After China's power industry began to regain profits in 2013, Hubei Energy Group signed the development agreement with the government of Hubei province to build three large-scale, coal-fired power projects in Hubei, including the re-launching of the Phase III project.

The project is seeking procurement of long-lead equipment, including the main turbine, boiler and generator equipment, which it expects to select shortly.

Upon receiving approval from the National Energy Administration (NEA), construction of the project is expected to kick off later this year. Upon completion, the project will be able to generate more than 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, which is expected to improve safety and reliability in the Hubei grid, as well as alleviate the power shortage in Hubei, especially the load center in the eastern areas.
