Dominion Generation Begins Preliminary Site Work on Controversial Coal-Fired Power Plant in Virginia

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Dominion Generation has started initial site preparation and road work in the first week of this month on a controversial coal-fired power plant in southwestern Virginia's Wise County. Dominion has been planning for the 586-megawatt (MW) project since 2004, but because of public worries about greenhouse gas emissions, smog and the ozone, the $1.6 billion plant's permitting process took much longer than anticipated.

The facility will consist of two circulating fluidized bed boilers, an auxiliary boiler, coal-handling system, two fly ash silos, an oil storage tank, coal truck unloading facilities, a 585-MW Toshiba steam turbine/generator set, plus miscellaneous equipment.

Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from the boilers will be controlled by low NOx burners and a selective non-catalytic reduction unit using ammonia injection. Particulate matter will be captured with a fabric filter baghouse. Flue gas desulfurization scrubbers will also be installed for each boiler to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions.

The Shaw Group Incorporated (NYSE:SGR) (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) was chosen to perform engineering and construction services. Mechanical construction is scheduled to start this spring with completion slated for the last quarter of 2011.

Dominion Generation, a subsidiary of Dominion Resources Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia), will own and operate the plant.
