Researched by Industrial Info Resources (SugarLand, Texas)--Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) recently added 402 megawatts (MW) to its renewable portfolio by commissioning the Los Vientos Windfarm. The windfarm is located in Willacy County in south Texas, approximately 120 miles south of Corpus Christi in the city of Lyford, and approximately 20 miles from the Gulf Coast. Construction started in the fourth quarter of 2011 and was completed the fourth quarter of 2012.

There were two phases to this project. The first consisted of 84 Siemens SWT 2.3-100 wind turbines, with each producing 2.3 MW of renewable energy. Duke Energy acquired a 25-year power purchase agreement with CPS Energy (San Antonio, Texas) for all the electrical power generated from Phase I of the Los Vientos Windfarm.

The second phase consisted of 84 Mitsubishi Heavy Industry wind turbines, each of which produce 2.4 MW of renewable energy. The combined rating for these units is 402 MW. Los Vientos II Wind Project will sell all the electrical power generated to Austin Energy under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

Wanzek Construction (Fargo, North Dakota) provided the engineering, procurement and construction services for the project.
