Enbridge Studies Big Crude Oil Pipeline for West Coast Markets

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Enbridge Incorporated (TSE:ENB/NYSE:ENB) (Calgary, Alberta) is in the conceptual study phase of a new 1,400 kilometer crude oil pipeline to transport crude oil from the oil sands rich areas of Northern Alberta to export markets on the West Coast of Canada. The $1.6 billion dollar pipeline would originate in either Fort McMurray or Edmonton and travel west to Prince Rupert.

Secondary supporting facilities are estimated to include up to ten new pump stations along the route and a new export terminal at Prince Rupert with a storage capacity of up to four million barrels of crude oil. From Prince Rupert tankers could carry the crude into the West Coast markets of California, Oregon and Washington.

By shipping the crude oil to these markets, the lengthy and costly expense of constructing a new Canadian-U.S. pipeline will be avoided. Enbridge hopes to have this 400,000 barrel per day pipeline in service by the end of 2006 or early 2007.

Enbridge Incorporated has pipelines strategically located to take advantage of the growth in oil sands production in Alberta and at the present time transports 2.2 million barrels per day of crude oil and other hydrocarbons in the area. Canadian government figures suggest that the present 500,000 barrel per day production in the area from oil sands will reach 3.5 million barrels per day by 2011 and this expanded capacity will demand new pipelines, pipeline expansions and new infrastructure such as storage, power & refining.
