Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Info Resources; Houston, Texas). HPA, Incorporated (Jacksonville, Florida) was awarded a contract from the Jacksonville Port Authority to provide preliminary engineering for a $200 million Dames Point Container Terminal Expansion in Jacksonville, Florida. Plans consist of constructing a new container terminal on 158 acres of undeveloped land along the St. John’s River, with future expansion plans to 200 contiguous acres. The new facility will be constructed between two existing facilities, the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal and JAXPORT’s existing cargo terminal. The expansion will include the construction of two 1,200-foot berths and the installation of six Post-Panamax Container cranes and necessary infrastructure to accommodate operations. A general construction contract will be awarded in May of 2006, with construction anticipated to begin in the summer of 2006. Overall completion is slated for the fall of 2007 and terminal operations are expected to begin in late fall of 2007 or the early spring of 2008.

JAXPORT and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Limited (MOL), a Tokyo-based transportation company will fund construction for the new terminal. JAXPORT will lease the new container terminal to MOL who will operate the facility with its terminal operating partner, TRAPAC, a leading West Coast container terminal operator and vessel stevedore founded in 1987 by MOL.

The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) is an independent agency of the city of Jacksonville and they are responsible for the development, marketing and management of Jacksonville’s public seaport terminals. JAXPORT currently owns three cargo terminals, one cruise terminal and leases most of its property to private companies for operations. Approximately 7,000 direct and 35,000 indirect jobs have been thus been created.
