Fiber Optic and Tech Conductor Venture for Koreans in South Africa

Korean company Taihan Electric Wire Company and the South African black empowerment company Malesela Holdings have launched a fiber optic manufacturing plant in Vereeniging, Gauteng Province, the industrial heart of South Africa. The Koreans have made an initial investment of $10 million into the project, which will produce 300,000km of fiber per year in the first phase to supply the South African market through a contract with Eskom, the national electricity utility, as well as exporting to Africa and Europe. Among other products it will market are aluminum overhead conductors, copper strip products, and bare copper wire in addition to power cable. Further injections of development capital will come as local, African, and international markets develop.
