FPL Energy Completes Construction on $72 Million Windfarm Expansion in North Dakota

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Oliver County Wind LLC, a subsidiary of FPL Group Incorporated (NYSE:FPL) (North Palm Beach, Florida), has completed construction and commenced commercial operation of the $72 million, 50-megawatt (MW) expansion project at the Oliver Wind Energy Center in Center, North Dakota.

Construction started in August 2007 and was completed in late fall. FPL commenced full commercial start-up of the expansion this month. The project consisted of installing 32 1.5-MW GE Energy wind turbine generators to the existing facility. The project will be able to supply renewable energy to approximately 15,000 homes. With the new expansion, the plant will have a total capacity of more than 100 MW.

The power generated by the Oliver facility is being purchased by Minnesota Power, a division of CALLETE (NYSE:ALE) (Duluth, Minnesota), through a long-term power-purchase agreement. The Oliver expansion will help Minnesota Power in its efforts to reach Minnesota's 10% renewable energy objective by 2015.

Wanzek Construction (Fargo, North Dakota) provided the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services for the project.
