Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Gold Canyon Resources, Incorporated (CDNX:GCU) (Vancouver, British Columbia) is performing exploration and preliminary site studies for a gallium ore mine at a site near McDermitt, Nevada. If the plant proves economically viable for mining of gallium, it could become the only U.S. producer of the exotic metal and the only dedicated gallium source in the world. Currently gallium is derived as a byproduct of Bauxite ore and zinc processing.
Gallium has seen tremendous growth in recent years for use in GA-AS (Gallium-Arsenide) semiconductor wafers, which are used in cell phones, computers, and other electronic components. Projected growth of 20-30% for gallium has been predicted by industry watchers.
The company estimates that it will cost $95 million to build the mine, process plant, and necessary infrastructure for the production of gallium at the site.
