GreenField Ethanol Expects Ontario Plant to Be Fully Operational by Mid-December

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held GreenField Ethanol (Toronto, Ontario) expects to have a new Ontario ethanol plant fully operational by mid-December. The plant, located near Prescott, Ontario, began taking in grains last week and is expected to begin producing ethanol and distillers grains after completing production-equipment and systems testing and start-up procedures.

When fully operational, the plant will produce 50 million gallons (190 million liters) of fuel ethanol per year from approximately 19 million bushels of corn. The estimated $160 million project began construction in December 2006 and took two years to complete.

The plant sits in the shadows of the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge that connects Ontario to New York at the Port of Prescott and is in an ideal location with transportation infrastructure of road, rail and barge commodity transport.

GreenField, Canada's largest ethanol producer, is also involved in the country's first commercial-scale municipal waste-to-ethanol plant with partner Enerkem (Montreal, Quebec) that is expected to begin construction soon in Edmonton, Alberta. This $70 million plant is expected to produce 36 million liters of ethanol per year using municipal solid waste. The company has signed a 25-year agreement with the city of Edmonton for feedstock for the plant, and the city also contributed $20 million to aid in construction of the facility. Construction is expected to get under way in spring 2009 and be operational by mid-2010.
