Hatch Nuclear Power Station Prepping for Refueling, Maintenance Outage

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Plant workers at the Edwin Hatch nuclear power station (Baxley, Georgia) discussed safety issues at a luncheon on Friday, January 25, 2008, in anticipation of the refueling and maintenance outage expected to begin this week.

Safety meetings at a nuclear power plant are common, as they keep workers abreast of possible hazardous situations on normal operating days. However, before a refueling and maintenance outage, the meetings cover situations that might arise during certain portions of such an in-depth and critical procedure. The nearly monthlong outage will not only add fuel-rod bundles to the Unit 1 reactor (which Hatch does every other year for each reactor), but the plant is also going to enhance the turbine and generator control systems through various electronic upgrades. The outage is scheduled to commence in the late hours of Friday, February 1, 2008, and is expected to last slightly longer than a month.

The Edwin I. Hatch nuclear plant is jointly owned by Georgia Power (50.1%), Oglethorpe Power Corporation (30%), Municipal Electrical Authority of Georgia (17.7%) and the City of Dalton (2.2%). Construction of the plant began in 1968, with Unit 1 becoming operational in December 1975 and Unit 2 becoming operational in September 1979. The $934 million plant consists of two 900-megawatt boiling water reactors manufactured by General Electric.
