Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In order to alleviate the increasing tension between power supply and demand in the five provinces of the China Southern Power Grid, China Southern Power Grid Company Limited (CSG) is accelerating the construction of key projects planned to cope with the peak load in the coming summer and making sure these projects begin operation as scheduled. From January to May this year, newly added installed capacity of China Southern Power Grid reached 3,490 megawatts (MW).

CSG plans to have 10 key projects begin operation in the first half this year, and to increase capacity of the west-east power transmission passage by 2,900 MW. So far, various key projects in grid construction are progressing smoothly. Of these, six key projects, including the 500-kilovolt Yanshan-Daxin-Nanning (Southern Yunnan Transmission) Project have been put into operation as scheduled. The Huizhou-Boluo Section of Huizhou Pump-Storage Power Station Transmission Project was commissioned at the end of May, and the first unit of the 2,400 MW Huizhou Pump-Storage Power Station is now under wet commissioning.

Based on the statistics of CSG, at the end of May 2008 the total installed capacity of the China Southern Power Grid reached 132.35 million kilowatts (kW). The installed capacity increased 3,490 MW in the first 5 months this year, consisting of 2,190 MW of hydropower and 1,300 MW of thermal power. From June to September, another 4,550 MW of new units will begin operation in the grid, including 3,430 MW of hydropower and 1,120 MW of thermal power.

CSG is also accelerating construction in the urban distribution grid aimed at stopping "bottlenecks" in the power supply, further enhancing the unified development of the power grid and power sources.

CSG is the second largest grid enterprise in China and the one of the country's two national grid enterprises. Installed capacity in the China Southern Power Grid surpassed 100 million kW for the first time in 2006. According to the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, the installed capacity in the China Southern Power Grid will expand to 147.28 million kilowatts in 2010.
