Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Due to electrical demand, Peterborough Utilities Incorporated and the city of Peterborough, Ontario, are moving forward with an expansion of the Long Street Generating Station, which is located on the Otonabee River in Peterborough. The station has a capacity of 4.1 megawatts (MW), with three horizontal double Francis hydro turbines. All operations at the unmanned facility are monitored by operators at the Peterborough Water Treatment Plant.
The Long Street expansion will create a new powerhouse opposite the existing site. The new powerhouse will consist of two Francis hydro turbines. Each turbine will produce 3 MW of renewable energy. Other components accommodating the new facility are to include a new power canal and tailrace. After the canal is established, the current switchyard and substation will be relocated next to the new canal.
The existing dam will be retrofitted with a new automated gate. When complete, both facilities will have a combined output capacity of 10 MW. This much electricity should provide enough power to supply green energy to more than 2,600 homes. In addition, it is anticipated that approximately 80 construction jobs will be created. In order to provide safe and effective operating practices, the bypass gate will ensure that both plants can be bypassed if there is no plant connection available.
