Ontario Hydropower Plant Begins Operation

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The six-megawatt expansion of the London Street Hydroelectric Generating Station, which is located in Peterborough, Ontario, recently achieved commercial operation following its completion by Peterborough Utilities Services Incorporated (Peterborough).

The new facility is located adjacent to the existing London Street Generating Station, which has been in service for more than 90 years. The new facility uses three Voith Hydro Turbines to generate renewable power for thousands of residents in the surrounding region. The project had a total investment value of $30 million.

Hydro ECI Incorporated (Granby, Quebec) managed the construction of the project on behalf of the owners. The project employed over 100 construction workers at the peak of construction, and has created permanent operating positions. McGhee-Krizsan Engineering Limited was responsible for the design and engineering for the project, which took about two years to construct. Peterborough Utilities will operate and maintain the facility.
