MidAmerican Energy Company (Des Moines, Iowa), a privately held company, is in the early construction phase of a $340 million power plant in Iowa. The 540MW Des Moines Energy Center is anticipated to operate about 3,000 to 4,000 hours per year, but will have the capability to run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Site construction began last spring and is currently at the 9% completion mark. The plant is scheduled to enter simple-cycle commercial operation next spring and generate 340MW. Combined-cycle operation is scheduled for May 2005 and will increase generation to 540MW.
