NDRC Gives Approval for 10,000-Megawatt Wind Power Base in China

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) recently gave approval for pre-stage preparation of the 10,000-megawatt (MW) Jiuquan wind power base and associated 750-kilovolt (kV) grid project, the government of Jiuquan City announced. The base would be the largest in China.

Jiuquan is rich in wind resources. The theoretical wind power reserve in the city is 60,000 MW of which 14,000 MW is exploitable. The city's installed capacity of wind power has been increased to 410 MW at present since the first experimental wind turbine was operated in Yumen in 1995. The Jiuquan windfarm has become one of the top five windfarms in China.

According to the NDRC, eight windfarms with improved construction conditions and a total planned installation capacity of 35,650 MW, including Beidaqiao, Ganhekou, Qiaowan and Liuyuan in Guazhou county; Changma, Diwopu, Sanshilijinzi in Yumen City; and the Mazongshan windfarm in Xiaobei county; will be included in the Jiuquan base. The first target is to have a newly added wind power installed capacity of 3,000 MW during the 11th five-year plan (2006-10). By the end of 2010, the total installed capacity of wind power in the Jiuquan base is expected to reach 3,410 MW. The second target is to expand the installed capacity of wind power in Jiuquan to 10,650 MW in 2020.

In order to speed up the development of wind power, Jiuquan has completed the wind resources evaluation, windfarm site selection and a two-year plan for the city. So far, 12 windfarms have been listed as key construction projects by Gansu Province's Development and Reform Commission.
