Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Omaha Public Power District took its coal-fired Nebraska City Power Station offline Sunday to perform unplanned maintenance. Both plant units, totaling more than 1,300 megawatts (MW), were crippled with unforeseen mechanical complications, forcing plant operators to take both offline.

Unit 1 (738 MW) had a throttle valve that was not opening and closing properly. Unit 2 (738 MW) experienced a failure on one of the boiler feed-pumps. Plant workers were still investigating the causes of these problems and were hoping for a quick turnaround. Maintenance personnel hope to have the units back in service within the next couple of days at the earliest, if no other issues arise.
The Omaha Public Power District is one of the largest publicly owned utilities in the U.S., serving more than 352,000 customers in 13 southeast Nebraska counties.
