Nucor Nears Construction Kick-Off for New Steel Mill Melt Shop in Texas

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) (Charlotte, North Carolina) is awaiting official permit approval to begin construction on a $100 million new melt shop at the company's hot rolled carbon steel products mill located in Jewett, Texas.

Equipment for the project has been purchased. Concast America Incorporated (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) will supply a complete new melt shop and billet caster. Major components include an ultra high power single bucket charge 90 ton AC EAF (Electric Arc Furnace), ladle metallurgical furnace, and 4/5 strand billet caster. Nucor will also install a complete new water system for the melt shop.

Nucor expects to receive the final construction permits within the next two months and will kick-off construction in March or April of 2003. The new melt shop will replace five existing EAFs and will produce close to 1.2 million tons per year of carbon steel billets when complete in 2004.

This is the second half of a $200 million modernization program that Industrialinfo.com has been tracking since 1992 as part of its North American Industrial Database.
