Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Pacific Ethanol, Incorporated (NASDAQ:PEIX) (Fresno, California) has completed construction of its first of three West Coast fuel ethanol plants and celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The company is now going through the plant start-up process and is expected to be in full operation by mid-November.

Construction began in September 2005, and the project took just over a year to complete. The plant has a nameplate design capacity of 35 million gallons per year and will utilize Delta-T’s licensed process technology. Local contractor W.M. Lyles Company was the general contractor for the estimated $50 million project.

In May 2006, Pacific began construction on a second ethanol plant in Boardman, Oregon. The Boardman project is expected to be complete during the first quarter of 2007, and will utilize the same design firm, Delta-T. Pacific Ethanol is expecting construction to move a bit faster than the Madera project. The plant has a nameplate capacity of 35 million gallons per year and will utilize corn as the primary feedstock. Ford Bacon & Davis (Monroe, Louisiana) was selected as the general contractor for this estimated $60 million project.

A third plant is also in the works for Pacific Ethanol that will be located in Visalia, California. The company is still working on the business plan for the third plant and a firm construction schedule has yet to be developed.

Pacific Ethanol has also recently completed equity funding of $138 million to provide the company with sufficient cash to both accelerate its stated goal of completing five ethanol production facilities totaling 220 million gallons of annual capacity by mid-year 2008 and plans to complete additional ethanol production facilities to 420 million gallons of annual capacity by the end of 2010.
