Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--The newly formed Government in Pakistan has geared up its efforts to expedite execution of the long-pending Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline project. The 2,150-kilometer (km) gas pipeline also known as 'Peace Pipeline Project', will originate from South Pars in Assaluyeh region in Iran and will pass through the Sindh province in Pakistan before terminating in Multan.

Iran's Exploration & Production Company, National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) (Tehran, Iran) is providing assistance to the Government of Pakistan in ensuring the completion of multibillion dollar gas pipeline within the scheduled time. Inter State Gas Systems Private Limited (ISGS) (Islamabad, Pakistan) along with Tadbir Energy Development Group (Tehran, Iran) will be responsible for the operations of the pipeline.

Iran has completed construction of the gas pipeline from the South Pars natural gas complex in the Persian Gulf till the Pakistan border. The country has now assured to help Pakistan to complete the remaining segment that would fall within the territory of Pakistan.

Around 8.7 Billion Cubic Meters (BCM) of natural gas has been proposed to be exported annually to Pakistan for a period of 25 years. As part of strategic cooperation, Iran has also made a proposal to extend the pipeline from Pakistan Border to India for which discussions are on.

Pakistan is facing a major energy crisis as about 35% of the electricity in the country is being generated by using furnace oil, which is considered to be an expensive resource. This is the prime reason of the high industrial tariff in Pakistan which eventually constrains them to export and compete. Natural gas is a far more optimal fuel for power generation.

This pipeline is expected to help supplying natural gas to the Pakistan's manufacturing and industrial sectors, which may in turn, improve the country's ability to compete in the international market. The newly appointed Prime Minister of Pakistan has also expressed his government's commitment to implement the project on a priority basis to settle the country's energy crisis.
