Susquehanna Nuclear Unit 1 has a capacity of 1,280 megawatts (MW). The cause of the reduction in power is still under investigation, but officials have confirmed that a recirculation MG set motor failed.
Officials say that they hope to repair the motor while the unit remains at reduced power (30%). If the investigation unveils any further complications, they may be forced to take the unit offline to make the needed repairs.
Plant officials expect to return the unit to full power before the holiday weekend is over.
The Susquehanna Steam Electric Station consists of two GE Hitachi boiling water reactors. Unit 2 has a 1,260-MW capacity.
