Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Developers are proposing more than 12,500 megawatts (MW) of new generation in New York. If these projects come to fruition, the state's generation capacity could increase by 31%, bringing its capacity up from about 44,400 MW to about 52,900 MW. New planned generation unit additions will use varied fuel sources, including nuclear, conventional coal, hydroelectric (conventional & hydrokinetic), natural gas, waste heat, oil, biomass, landfill gas solar, fuel cell and wind technologies.

Wind generation leads the planned generation (46.2%) with plans for 52 windfarms producing 5,787 MW, an increase of about 1,000% in wind capacity. Hydroelectric power will follow with more than 2,400 MW of which 1,600 MW would be conventional and 800 would be hydrokinetic energy.

Conventional fuels are expected to supply about 4,200 MW of new generation. New natural-gas, simple- and combined-cycle units will add another almost 2,500 MW of generation increasing capacity to about 19,000 MW of natural gas generation. Expanding on coal generation, NRG Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton, New Jersey) plans to install a 600 MW integrated gasification combined-cycle unit at its Huntley Station, and the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities is looking at installing a circulating fluidized bed unit at its Samuel A. Carlson Power Station. Not to be left out is the possible addition of the 1,600 MW Unit 3 at Constellation Energy Group's (NYSE:CEG) (Baltimore, Maryland) Nine Mile Point Nuclear Power Station (Lycoming, New York).
