Pulp and Paper Industry Spends Big on Boiler and Turbine Projects with More than $6 Billion in Project Expenditures Globally
Pulp and Paper Industry spends $6 billion on power projects.
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugarland, Texas)--Pulp and Paper manufacturers around the world are investing heavily in steam and power generation projects at mill sites. Industrial Info is tracking more than $6 billion in project expenditures aimed at building new power plants, installing additional electrical generating units and rebuilding and upgrading boilers and turbines as well as auxiliary equipment/systems. Project expenditures range from $1 million to as much as $260 million and include more than 330 project spending plans.
Installations of new electrical generating units range in size from 5 megawatts (MW) to 300 megawatts, including steam and gas turbines. One of the largest expenditures on record is tied to plans to build a 290-MW power plant as part of a $1.8 billion grassroot pulp mill project in Brazil.
Expenditures include projects for both power and recovery boilers, along with the related environmental control equipment. One example is a project plan that calls for a $4 million investment to replace an electrostatic precipitator at a mill in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. in 2017.
Examples of project plans include:
- $187 million, 110-MW Grassroot Coal-Fired Power Station in Japan
- $128 million, 60-MW Combustion Turbine Unit Addition in the U.K.
- $106 million, 150-MW Cogen Unit Addition in Germany
- $100 million, New Power Boiler in North Carolina
- $73 million, 50-MW Combined-Cycle Unit in Mexico
- $20 million, 22-MW Combustion Turbine Addition in Michigan
