Redding Electric Department of Redding, California is in the process of adding a 43 mega-watt (MW) unit No. 5 at their power station. Unit No. 5 consists of a natural gas-fired Alstom GTX100 combustion turbine/generator with an Alstom heat recovery steam generator to provide steam to an existing 11MW steam turbine/generator. Unit No. 5 is scheduled to be commissioned and on line by May 2002.
The Redding Electric Department was formed in 1918. The utility currently has 28MW of power provided by steam, 3.8MW provided by hydroelectric and 67MW provided by three combustion turbine/generators for a total of 98.8MW of generation capacity. With the new unit, the city's generating capacity will increase to 141.8MW.
